Our dedication to all creatures doesn’t end once our practice doors close for the evening

Why we do it

Being a veterinary practice means helping animals is in our nature; however, our dedication to all creatures great and small doesn’t end once our practice doors close for the evening. At The Neighbourhood Vet, we are committed to using our veterinary skills for the benefit of both the animals we treat, and the humans caring for them, and many of our staff have volunteered for animal charities in the UK and around the world.

When you visit us, you will notice photographs displayed around our practice. These were taken by Suzanne in Africa whilst working for The Mdzananda Animal Clinic in South Africa (www.mdzananda.co.za) and in the Serengeti National Park in Tanzania on a project funded by The Global Alliance for Rabies Control (GARC) (www.rabiesalliance.org). These are some of our favourite images which show you the local people and the love they have for their animals.

If you would like to make a donation to either of our chosen charities, please visit the links shown above. Alternatively, please feel free to pop in and make your contribution to one of our charity boxes.

Mdzananda provides the only permanent, on-site veterinary service to the cats and dogs owned by 1 million people living in Khayelitsha, near Cape Town in South Africa. The clinic and its staff make a real difference to the lives of many animals in the township, and the owners appreciate and highly value the work of the clinic.

GARC

GARC is striving to free people and animals throughout the world from the threat of rabies through the vaccination of dogs, rabies monitoring and education. As a result, GARC created the annual World Rabies Day on September 28th.

GARC has had many successes since its humble beginnings. One example is the Serengeti vaccination project in which 35,000 – 50,000 dog vaccinations are administered every year, protecting dogs and humans from rabies.

PAPYRUS Prevention of Young Suicide

As many of you will be aware, The Neighbourhood Vet is owned by a large veterinary company, IVC Evidensia. Each year, we as a practice are offered a £1000 grant from IVC to be donated to a charity chosen by our staff. This year, our nominated charity is PAPYRUS, which supports a cause close to many of the team's hearts.

PAPYRUS - Prevention of Young Suicide is a UK charity dedicated to the prevention of suicide and the promotion of positive mental health & emotional well-being in young people.

Suicide is the biggest killer of people aged 35 and under in the UK and sadly, the rate within the veterinary profession is considerably higher than that of the general population.

PAPYRUS was founded in 1997 by a group of bereaved parents, who had each lost children to suicide. The founders shared the core belief that suicide is preventable and that those with lived experience of suicide have a valuable and unique contribution to make to the wider conversation around suicide.

The donation will help fund training, education and the continuing provision of a 24/7 support helpline. Moreover, we plan to continue to support the charity in continuing to fundraise throughout 2023.

If you’d like to know more about the amazing work that PAPYRUS does or to support them yourselves, then head to https://www.papyrus-uk.org/
